Dr. Syed Ovais is an accomplished academic, medicinal chemist, patent professional, and educator with expertise spanning chemistry, drug discovery, medicinal chemistry, intellectual property rights, and patent law. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi, an M.Sc. in Chemistry (Gold Medalist), an LL.B., and is a Registered Indian Patent Agent. He has been serving as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in the Higher Education Department, Jammu & Kashmir since 2017, and previously worked as a Patent Attorney at K & S Partners, where he specialized in patent drafting, prosecution, litigation, patentability assessment, freedom-to-operate analyses, and intellectual property portfolio management. Dr. Ovais possesses extensive research experience in the design, synthesis, characterization, and biological evaluation of bioactive heterocyclic compounds, including pyrazolines, pyridazinones, sulfonylureas, and related medicinally important scaffolds. His research has focused on anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial drug development. He has also worked on nanotechnology-based therapeutic systems under a DRDO-funded research project. A prolific researcher, he has authored numerous publications in reputed international journals such as the European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry Research, Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, Journal of Enzyme Inhibition and Medicinal Chemistry, and Archives of Pharmacy. He has also contributed several book chapters in the fields of pharmacogenomics, medicinal chemistry, phytochemistry, and natural products. His unique combination of expertise in scientific research, medicinal chemistry, patent drafting, patent prosecution, and higher education enables him to bridge the gap between innovation and intellectual property protection. He has drafted and prosecuted patent applications for leading national and international organizations, including CSIR laboratories, NIPER, Delhi University, BASF, Eli Lilly, and Incyte Pharma.
